Montserrat, Spain 

Why go: Just an hour from Barcelona, Montserrat pairs dramatic, otherworldly peaks with centuries of history, sweeping Catalonian views, and a mountaintop monastery.

Cairngorms National Park, Scotland

Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, United States

Why go: One of Utah’s quieter national parks, Capitol Reef is defined by the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile-long wrinkle in the Earth’s crust. Its colorful cliffs, narrow canyons, sandstone domes, and natural arches offer plenty to explore without the crowds found elsewhere in the state.

What to do: Hike between the narrow walls of Grand Wash, climb to Cassidy Arch, or follow the Hickman Bridge Trail to a massive natural span. The park’s layered rock formations also make it a popular destination for canyoneering. Prefer two wheels? Cycling is permitted on several roads, including the 58-mile Cathedral Valley Loop, which combines paved stretches with bentonite clay, sandy tracks, and river crossings.

What to do: Explore the Giza Plateau on foot to take in the pyramids, tombs, and Sphinx from different vantage points. Go early to cover more ground before the heat sets in, then relax with a dip in a modern oasis (aka hotel pool).

Why go: If wild landscapes and a little adventure are your thing, the South Island delivers. Queenstown is made for getting your heart rate up, Milford Sound is the kind of place you’ll want to stare at for a while and Aoraki / Mount Cook gives you a front-row seat to some seriously impressive mountains. It also happens to be home to Geordie Hill Station, where our merino sheep live.

What to do: You actually can’t visit Geordie Hill Station. But you can make the most of the island around it. Take on a bungy jump or jet boat ride in Queenstown, cruise through Milford Sound or lace up your boots for the Hooker Valley Track. Why go: Luquillo is where beach days and rainforest adventures live happily side by side. Spend the morning on the sand, head into El Yunque when you’re ready for a change of scenery and save room for a stop at the famous kiosks along the way. It’s an easygoing corner of Puerto Rico with plenty to keep you outside.

What to do: Start with the beach, then make your way into El Yunque for a hike and a waterfall or swimming hole. When you’ve worked up an appetite, the Kioskos de Luquillo are the place to be, with dozens of spots serving up local Puerto Rican food. Basically, you can hike, swim and eat very well without going far.
